Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our STEM courses and programs

General Questions

Can parents attend with students?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it.

Parents are welcome to attend and participate in all our sessions. Many families find this to be a great bonding experience and it helps parents understand what their children are learning so they can continue the conversations at home.

My child has trouble reading/writing, will they still be able to participate?

Absolutely! We work with students of all ages and abilities.

Our hands-on approach means that much of the learning happens through doing rather than reading or writing. Parents can also attend to assist, and we adapt our teaching methods to support every child's learning style.

Do you cater for children on the autism spectrum (ASD)?

Absolutely! We love working with children on the autism spectrum.

Many children with ASD have a natural affinity for STEM subjects and excel in our structured, hands-on learning environment. Our small class sizes, clear instructions, and predictable routines work well for neurodiverse learners.

We encourage parents to attend sessions to provide additional support when needed. Please let us know about any specific accommodations that would help your child succeed - we're always happy to adapt our approach.

Course Questions

It says many of your courses are "more academic" rather than just a "show"?

If you are picturing an old-fashion school room with a teacher lecturing at the front, and students frantically taking notes, don't worry - that's not what we do!

It just means that while we do lots of hands-on experiments, we also take time to look at the concepts (and yes, sometimes even the mathematics) behind an experiment. We believe in understanding the "why" as well as the "how."

What if I miss a week?

Class notes, videos, and links are all online.

We understand that life happens! All our lesson materials are available online so you can catch up on anything you missed. You can also reach out to your instructor for additional support.

For information about make-up classes and our attendance policies, please see our policies page.

What should I expect at my first class?

Your first class will be welcoming, engaging, and hands-on!

We start with introductions and a brief overview of what we'll be learning. Then we dive straight into practical activities - no long lectures or boring theory sessions. You'll be building, experimenting, and discovering from day one.

Our instructors create a supportive environment where questions are encouraged and mistakes are learning opportunities. Parents are welcome to stay and observe or participate alongside their children.

Practical Questions

What if I don't have an iPad, tablet, or laptop?

There are iPads and laptops available to borrow during class (by prior arrangement)

We don't want technology to be a barrier to learning. Just let us know in advance if you need to borrow a device and we'll make sure one is available for you during class.

How do you ensure safety during experiments?

Safety is our top priority in all activities. We use age-appropriate tools and materials, provide proper safety equipment when needed, and maintain close supervision during all hands-on activities.

If you have any specific safety concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us to discuss them.

How are students grouped by age?

We typically offer two age groups, but we're flexible based on individual needs:

  • Junior classes: Ages 6-11 (1 hour sessions)
  • Senior classes: Ages 11-17 (1.5 hour sessions)

This allows us to tailor the complexity of activities and explanations to be age-appropriate while still covering the same core concepts. If your child would benefit from being in a different age group due to their interests or abilities, please discuss this with us - we're always willing to find the best fit.
